For the past 5 years we have done custom measuremnts for each bride at our Elizabeth Lee Flagship location. We want to provide our brides a beautiful custom fit that will ease the stress for alterations. We do not gurantee a perfect fit but majority of the brides ended up only needing a bustle.
Today we will talk about custom length of the dress, comparing neckline to hem and hollow to hem.
The neckline to hem measurement is the distance from the top of the neckline of a garment to the hem. It is a measurement of the total length of the garment, from the highest point on the neckline to the bottom edge of the garment.
The hollow to hem measurement starts at the center of the collarbone (hollow) and ends at the hem of a dress. The measurement is taken from the front of the body, starting at the hollow of the collarbone and ending at the hem.
Both the neckline to hem and hollow to hem measurements are used to determine the overall length of a garment, but they are taken from different points on the garment and give slightly different information. The neckline to hem measurement is taken from the highest point on the neckline, while the hollow to hem measurement is taken from the hollow of the collarbone.
Which measurment is more accurate for bridal dresses? The answer is neckline to hem.
The reasons are two folds.
First of all, Human error is the biggest factor as each person’s hollow is different and each stylist who measures the bride also does it differently.
Secondly, when production receives a Hollow to Hem measurement, they have to guess the neckline to hem in order to do the paper pattern. Each dress maker also has different methods where they start the hollow.
We strongly suggest against doing hollow to hem measurement when you are doing a custom length with Elizabeth Lee. When you are doing a custom length, make sure you submit neckline to hem instead.
