Frequently Asked Questions

How do you clean my gown?

Our specialists carefully clean every gown by hand with gentle chemicals that dissolves stains. Your gown is then rinsed in pure solvent until pristine.

What is preservation?

Once your gown is cleaned, we carefully pack with acid-free tissue in a museum-quality acid-free wedding chest. This protects your gown from the air and light that can cause unprotected gowns to yellow.

Why is your process different from other preservation companies?

Spills such as soda, wine and cake (often caused by a guest and unnoticed by the bride) contain sugar and may dry without leaving a visible mark. Sugar is not dissolved during ordinary dry-cleaning and caramelizes over time into unattractive brown stains.  We take extra steps to be sure all stains, both seen and unseen, are removed.

How does gown preservation affect the environment?

The use of any solvent generates carbon emissions—even if only from the electricity needed for machinery.  We asked Carbonfund.org to calculate the carbon emissions generated by your travel to and from our location, the cleaning and preservation process, and the manufacture of the wedding chest itself.  Our donations to Carbonfund.org offset the entire carbon footprint, and Carbonfund.org uses our donations to fund worldwide reforestation projects.

How is your wedding chest different from others?

Our wedding chest is completely acid-free, not just pH neutral.  Boxes that are only pH-neutral are not as safe for your gown because the neutralizer is water soluble and will dissolve, causing the chest to re-acidify over time.  We never use ordinary boxes and tissue as they are heavily acidic and cause yellowing. These materials may even “scorch” gowns by leaving dark brown streaks where the fabric touches the box.

Will my gown be vacuum sealed?

No. Vacuum sealing can trap moisture and cause mildew. Moisture and the electrostatic charge from vacuum sealed plastic combine to set wrinkles in the gown that no amount of pressing can remove.

Can I see my gown when it is in the wedding chest?

You can see your gown through an oval window made of oriented polyester, a chemically-inert material that will not yellow or damage your gown.  The window contains no plasticizers, does not transmit oils, greases or volatile aromatics and will withstand temperature extremes ranging from minus 70 degrees.

What else can I preserve with my gown?

Such things as headpieces and veils, petticoats, gloves, garters, and handkerchiefs may be stored with your gown. There is an additional charge for storing the gown and veil separately.  Shoes should not be stored with the gown because fumes from leather and glue can cause damage.

What is the guarantee?

100% international guarantee against caramelized sugar stains and yellowing of your gown.

What if I open my gown?

If you open your gown, the guarantee is not voided but improper handling of the gown may cause damage.  If your gown is handled excessively or soiled it should be cleaned and preserved again.
